Thoughts on Star Trek Into Darkness

I honestly can’t decide how I feel about the Star Trek movie. Acting - phenomenal. Writing - phenomenal. But the whole casting a white guy as Khan thing wasn’t cool. But, at the same time, I was glad to see that the trope of “Arab guy blows up a building” thing also was not used. So, I’m conflicted. 

I heard that the reason the switch was made was to avoid 9/11 flashbacks. Well, if you’re afraid of that, why are you even using that plot point in the movie? Seriously, you don’t have to blow up a building. It could have been anything. If that was the reason, that’s not justified, and changing it would remove the need in any way to feel the need to change Khan’s race. No blown up building means no 9/11 fears, and no trope to deal with.

Other than that, the movie was amazing. I had such a great time watching it. Spock and Kirk’s interactions were flawless. I liked how none of the lines, especially the comedic lines, between them felt forced. And can we talk about Zoe Saldana for a sec? She was great! Uhura was beautiful, sassy, strong, and fun! A great role model for little girls. The rest of the cast was amazing, too. Simon Pegg was fun, Anton Yelchin was adorable as ever, Karl Urban was great as Mccoy again. I was a little saddened to see that Sulu did not have a whole lot to do in the movie until he got to sit in the Chair. That was pretty cool.
